II Pedro 3.13

Meditation for the fourth week since quarantine began

Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Psalms 127.1

I have made use of this biblical text on several occasions to guide those who are getting married and it has also been my text for wedding sermons. However, I notice that the principles taught here have a valid application for all other human institutions.

We have a commission from God, a task assigned to us, we must build a house and we must take care of the city.
God has commissioned us to build, but the verse says that If God does not build, the work of construction is in vain.
What does this mean?
We must consider society as a building that must be built. But this building has a construction plan (a blueprint), the construction plan has been designed by the architect of the Universe. The building should be constructed according to the designer’s shape and beauty specifications and respecting the instructions regarding the materials to be used.

There are serious problems when an Architect or Civil Engineer performs an inspection and realizes that the instructions of the plan are not being followed either in terms of form or materials.
We then are in serious trouble, the Architect is doing the construction overhaul and he is very upset because the builders have ignored many of the specs.
The world and its civilizations, that is, human society, will accomplish beauty as long as it is built according to the model of the Divine Architect. For this reason there are aspects of civilization that are worthy of admiration, because whether they want it or not, they have worked according to the intention of the Designer. But the functionality of this «social building» has been jeopardized whenever the materials and the precise instructions of the Architect have not been used.
The reason the walls of the great building are beginning to collapse, the reason the columns are cracking, the reason those who are building are cluttering each other, is that they haven’t followed the divine instructions for construction. The verse also tells us of a city that should be kept, protected, defended. This clearly indicates that there are threats, possible invasions from the enemy. And the text tells us that we may be making a terrible effort to safeguard this great city, but it may be in vain, it will not do any good if we have not followed divine instructions.
Humanity has built society as a great building that does not correspond to the design of the Architect.
Humanity has not properly guarded the great city, ignoring warnings of threats of invasion.
The material with which society is built is the family, and if the family is weak and poorly built, society will be weak and poorly built as well.
Humanity has rejected the model of God for the family and has rejected the model of God for the Church. Society has dared to redefine the concept of marriage and family and has despised the value of human life and on the other hand, the concept of the Church as the People of the Covenant has also been ignored and belittled. All this is equivalent to an absolute rejection of the construction plan provided by God for humanity and is equivalent to leaving the door open for the invasion of the enemies of human race.
Where are the construction plans for the house? Where are the instructions on how to take care of the city? Does anyone know where they are?
God in His Holy Word, the Bible, has very clearly traced the design and materials necessary for the construction of the ideal building. God in His Holy Word teaches us that we do not have the power to take care of ourselves, that we must recognize we need Him to take care of us.
Rejection of the Word of God is equivalent to rejection of God Himself.
We believers are insistently asking God for this time of crisis not go by in vain, but for it to awaken consciences and to return to Him, returning to His Word. And although many do not heed the call to repentance, we should not faint, because one day, the owner and Architect of the house, the Lord Jesus will return and everything will be rebuilt, as the apostle Peter wrote:

«Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.»
II Peter 3.13
